

Join our Collaborative Workshop Program with JIWA 17-22 May – Led by Dodon Dimyati, bamboo specialist trained in Jogjakarta (Sahabat Bamboo since 2006).
We would love to share with you this experience of constructing a Community Classroom from bamboo at Jiwa Garden from May 17th for a 6 Days. The course program will include theory and hands-on sessions running 8:30AM – 4PM each day incl. breakfast and lunch; covering bamboo treatment, tools & safety, model-making and carpentry, truss construction, layout, scaffold and framing. You will be mentored by Balinese carpenters and led by Dodon.

OUTLINE OF TRAINING MODULES
Day 1 – Bamboo Construction Training
8:30 – 9:00- Team Introduction
9:00 – 10:30- Course Introduction
- Theory: Harvesting and Treatment
- Site Considerations and Workflow: Making an ergonomic construction work site; organizing the tools and the materials
- Safety Measures and Awareness: Safety first
- Tools and Safety: Using the right tools; practice sharpening tools (Sharpening the knife and the chisel)
10:30 – 12:00 Carpentry Introduction – demonstration
- Practice: Measuring and cutting; splitting the bamboo and making bamboo nails
12:00 – 13:00 Break time & lunch
13:00 – 15:00 Joinery Introduction – demonstration
- Practice: Making bamboo joinery (fish mouth) and practice using bamboo knife, chisel and drill
15:00 – 15:45 Theory and Site Observation: Intro for tomorrow’s session
15:45 – 16:00 Clean up
Day 2 – Making The Model and Making the 1st Truss for the construction
8:30 – 11:00
- Model making and design introduction
11:00 – 11:30
- Making a mold line for the trusses
- Theory of making a foundation
11:30 – 12:00
- Choosing the bamboo poles for the 1st truss and Put the bamboo on top of the mold line
12:30 – 13:00 Break time & lunch
13:00 – 14:00
- Connecting all the joint in the 1st truss using a long metal bolt
14:00 – 15:30
- Stand the first truss up
15:00 – 15:30
- Supporting the first truss using stagger/untreated bamboo poles and level it up
15:30 – 16:00 Clean up
Day 3 – Making The 2nd Truss and floor structure
8:30 – 9:00
- Choosing the bamboo poles and put them on the mold line for the 2nd truss
9:00 -12:00
- Connecting all the joints for the 2nd truss using a long metal bolt
- Stand the truss up
12:00 – 13:00 Lunch break
13:30 – 14:30
- Supporting the 2nd truss using untreated bamboo poles, make sure frame/structure is secured and level it up
14:30 – 15:30
- Making floor structure and bamboo scaffolding/stagger
15:30 – 16:00 Clean up
Day 4 – Making The 3rd truss and floor structure
8:30 – 10:00
- Choosing the bamboo and putting the bamboo on the mold line for the 3rd truss
10:00 -10:30
- Connecting all the joints for the 3rd truss using a long metal bolt
- Stand the truss up
12:00 – 13:00 Lunch break
13:00 – 13:30
- Supporting the third truss using untreated bamboo poles, make sure frame/structure is secured and level it up
13:30 – 15:30
- Making floor structure and bamboo scaffolding/stagger
15:30 – 16:00 Clean up
Day 5 – Making the front and rear roof structure and storage structure
8:30 – 11:00
- Making front roof structure (making fish mouth)
11:00 – 12:00
- Making rear roof structure (making fish mouth)
12:00 – 13:00 Lunch break

- Continue making rear the structure
14:00 – 15:30
- Making the storage structure
15:30 – 16:00
- Clean up
Day 6 – Making roof structure/beams
8:30 – 11:00
- Practice making bamboo curve (for the ridge beam or the top beam)
- Practice making bamboo extension
11:00 – 12:00
- Installing ridge beams (the top Beam and the side beam)
12:00 – 13:00 Lunch break
13:00 – 15:00
- Installing the front and the rear beams
15:00 – 15:30
- Putting semen mortal into the main pose and clean up
15:30- finish
- Discussing and Finalizing the workshop
