Sign-up for our 2027 – 3 month. This program will take place in Belega, Bali. We will be building a Bamboo and Light Clay Straw ecotourism abode.
The structure will be part hyperbolic (perimeter wall) combined with classical arched balinese-style roofing structure – aimed at combining the insulative properties of earth with the agility of beautiful bamboo to make a prototype for a livable room (with attached bathroom).

Welcome to Bamboo Carpentry & Construction! We provide a hands-on training program that teaches you how to design and build bamboo buildings. You will work on real projects, both individually and in groups, focusing on a nine meter (9m) diameter bamboo structure.
You will be guided by experienced bamboo builders who possess a wealth of knowledge and skills accumulated over years of practice, ensuring that you receive valuable insights throughout your journey. They will share their expertise and provide hands-on experience, carefully guiding you through the intricacies of working with bamboo. From mastering the techniques of bamboo joinery—where precision and craftsmanship come together—to a deep understanding of the structural principles of building, you will gain a comprehensive foundation in this unique form of carpentry. The program will take you step-by-step through a thoughtfully crafted curriculum designed to develop your practical knowledge and understanding of bamboo carpentry. With practical exercises and real-world applications integrated into each session, you’ll have ample opportunities to apply what you’ve learned, tackle creative projects, and further develop your skills in building, preparing you for real-life challenges in sustainable architecture and design. Additionally, you will engage in collaborative projects with fellow learners, fostering a supportive community where ideas can flourish and everyone can learn from one another.
Who is it for?:
This program is for anyone wanting to learn bamboo construction and is open to both complete beginners and those experienced in building. Participants will learn bamboo treatment methods and how to use other sustainable materials. By the end, they will understand bamboo construction and have the skills and confidence to take on their own projects.
3 Week Program Blocks:
Each 3 Week Program is an intensive course that focuses on the fundamentals of bamboo construction.
During the first 3 week block of our 3 month program participants will learn about the various types of bamboo, their properties, and how to select the right bamboo for different purposes. We will make a furniture piece, and gain hands-on experience in treating and preserving bamboo, as well as learn joinery techniques and methods for frame assembly and bending bamboo.
During the second 3 week block, we will focus on joinery and structural design. We will begin our main build, learn the process of making foundations and placement, the building process and method, costing out a build, and construct the frame/structure of our building project.
During the final 3 week block, we will focus on roofing design, material choices and also earth-building and plasters, decorative elements and finishing and do a personal project of our own design.

The training program runs from 8.30am to 4.30pm from Monday to Saturday. Lunch will be provided each day from 12 til 1pm. Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions or preferences, and we’ll be happy to accommodate them.
