Bamboo is a plant that’s reshaping approaches to sustainability and innovation. What makes bamboo truly extraordinary is that it continues to sequester carbon even after harvesting, enriching the soil, and preventing erosion. Its historical and modern-day applications, from ancient fine-weave baskets which could hold water to modern wind turbine blades, highlight its versatility and importance in today’s world.

Jaye Irving (Barefoot Sustainable Design) has dedicated 25 years to exploring the myriad possibilities of bamboo. For Jaye, bamboo is more than just a plant; it is a way of life. His journey began with crafting small items and evolved into creating magnificent structures worldwide. From café workshops to monumental installations, bamboo’s potential has allowed him to construct expansive spaces without the need for traditional timber. His projects, like the impressive 21-meter structure in New Caledonia and a towering 31-meter masterpiece at Boom Festival, showcase bamboo’s capabilities to redefine architecture.

Here’s a peak at one of Jaye’s talks: Here’s a sneak peek from Jaye’s inspiring presentation at our January training in Meru (Kenya):

Together, the power of bamboo can be harnessed to build a sustainable future for generations to come.
