Are you ready to learn practical hands-on bamboo building? We are offering programs this year – from individualised VIP programs spanning a day to a few days, to our larger group programs spanning 3 weeks (April & October) and 3 months (May-July).
We are excited to announce the program schedule for our 3 Month program running from May 11th to 27th July over 50 workshop days. During this year’s program we are developing further our Roundhouse hyperbolid base design prototype for affordable efficient bamboo building.

This design is based on a hyperboloid structure to elevate the main structure and employs thick splits of giant bamboo, measuring between 1-1.5 cm in thickness and 3 cm in width, to form a robust ring beam. This not only acts as the supporting base for both the floor and the roof structure but also locks the diameter of the hyperboloid, ensuring structural integrity and stability.
The techniques involved are quite accessible, not demanding a sophisticated workshop or extensive machinery set-up! We’ll explore a variety of alternative designs for the main structure that offer options for simple yet effective craftsmanship. This approach allows for integration with modern materials and can be applied for/to eco-tourism settings or domestic designs. Architects, “laypeople” and carpenters alike can GET the methods and contribute their skills.

Bali is known for the masterful techniques of bending bamboo and creating curved structures and open designs, which have become a hallmark of the island’s rich architectural heritage. These techniques draw on centuries of tradition, combined with more modern research and integration with engineered products and tools – showcasing the unique flexibility and strength of bamboo as a sustainable building material. Our programs not only cover the fundamental principles behind these methods but also delve into the artistry involved in crafting beautiful and functional spaces that harmonize with the surrounding environment. Whether you join us for three weeks or embark on a more immersive three-month journey, you will learn from skilled artisans who will guide you through hands-on experiences, allowing you to develop your skills and appreciate the intricacy of the craft.

Our 3 week program teaches the basics of building a structure on a small scale (2×4 or 3x3m) and covers all aspects of the structural aspects and requirements… See the live brochure here. We have a three week program running in April from the 13th to May 2nd.
Our 3 month bamboo building program goes much deeper into hands-on techniques, design and approaches to building with bamboo. This year’s program begins on May 11. The program will run Monday to Friday – 9am to 4.30pm – 5 weeks on, two weeks off (for Gallungan ceremony) and 5 weeks on again.

We will have a very special guest this year – head teacher of the Bamboo4Africa program Training – Jaye Irving (Canandian/Australian Architect and Permaculture Designer and Practicioner), joining us to co- teach this year’s program. And later this year or next year (depending on funding support), we plan to bring this build and course to Kenya and beyond.
The program will combine Jaye’s comprehensive 25 year knowledge and experience of bamboo with the specialised techniques of our local Balinese carpenters and builders.

Graduates from our 3 week and 3 month programs can join as assistants and assistant teachers on our upcoming programs in Africa – where we aim to bring affordable bamboo techniques to the village level, fostering sustainable construction methods that empower local artisans. This initiative is designed to enable more people to preserve and utilize traditional skills and level-up local livelihoods, enhancing economic stability within these communities. Furthermore, alongside our Waste to Wealth programs, we encourage and incentivize zero-waste lifestyle habits, promoting a holistic approach to environmental sustainability and community wellness that resonates throughout our initiatives. By participating in these programs, individuals not only gain invaluable experience but also contribute to a larger movement towards sustainable development and cultural preservation.
The 3 week and 3 month program will take place in Belega – Bali, in the Gianyar region near to Ubud, a serene locale known for its lush landscapes and rich cultural heritage. You will find the local culture and village life in Belega to be different than the touristy centre of Ubud – and will probably be invited to local events and ceremonies.
Accommodation is not included in the course price and there are various local options to choose from depending on your budget. We are 20 minutes to Keramas beach, 70 minutes from Kuta/Seminyak, 60 minutes from Canggu and 90 minutes from the Denpasar (Ngurah Rai) airport.
If you’re interested to join, please fill out the form below and we will be in touch.
