Welcome to the world of Bamboo Carpentry & Construction! Our comprehensive, hands-on training program will equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to build and construct with bamboo and natural materials – taking you step-by-step through a curriculum designed to develop your practical knowledge and understanding of bamboo carpentry.

Throughout the programs, participants have the opportunity to work on real-life projects, such as building bamboo structures and furniture pieces. You will be guided by experienced instructors who share their expertise and provide valuable insights into the art of bamboo construction. By the end of the program, you will have a solid foundation in bamboo construction and the confidence to continue your own projects. From mastering the techniques of bamboo joinery to understanding the principles behind its structural design, you’ll gain valuable insights and develop your skills through practically applying what you’ve learned.

This hands-on program is for those who would like to familiarise themselves through gaining practical experience in bamboo building – from knowledge of design principles and “what works” with bamboo, to immersion in the hands-on experience of building to become proficient in affordable bamboo design, carpentry and joinery, as well as to learn the “tricks of the trade” and unique design and traditional skills of artesian bamboo workers.

During the first three days we learn basic carpentry joinery while making a furniture item or group project. Then we explore modelling and design principles with bamboo through making miniature designs using small sticks of whittled bamboo. We will learn about the scaling and proportions of bamboo buildings and elaborate on a basic design model for our practical project – refining the design and gaining greater understanding through feedback from our bamboo teachers.

In the second week, we jump into more complex carpentry, field trips and and how to process bamboo materials to achieve our design. We will learn about making foundations and treatment of bamboo, and begin making the frame of the structure we work on during week 3: The third week is all hands-on building on site.
You can join for all or part of this program… We maintain small groups to ensure everyone gets experience in all aspects and adapt the overall program to the unique needs of each group.

Both the 3 Week and 3 Month Programs offered are designed to cater to individuals with different levels of experience in bamboo construction. Whether you are a beginner or have some prior knowledge, these programs will equip you with the necessary skills and experience to develop expertise in bamboo building.

3 Month Program:
Our 3 Month Program delves into the intricacies of bamboo construction over three three-week sessions – layering more complex elements of learning and coaching towards developing a complete design and costing for an individual build and support in its completion. This program is ideal for individuals who are looking to become proficient and build independently. Participants will learn from beginner to advanced techniques for designing and building bamboo structures through live construction exercises. They will explore different bamboo treatment methods and learn how to incorporate other sustainable materials into projects.

Throughout the program, participants will work on a variety of challenging projects, both individually and in teams, allowing them to apply their skills and creativity to real-world scenarios. By the end of the program, participants will have a comprehensive understanding of bamboo construction, along with the practical skills and confidence to undertake their own projects.

3 Week Program:
Each 3 Week Program focuses on the fundamentals of bamboo construction. During each 3 week block of our 3 month program participants will learn about the various types of bamboo, their properties, and how to select the right bamboo for different purposes, and also gain hands-on experience in treating and preserving bamboo, as well as techniques for joining and assembling bamboo to create functional structures. We focus on various techniques of joinery, structural design and bending bamboo according to participants’ skill level and provide grouped learning tasks and explore processes and costing out a build of our own design.

By the end of this training program, you’ll not only have a solid foundation in bamboo carpentry but also gain the confidence to tackle various small projects on your own. Whether you’re a seasoned builder looking to expand your skill set, a passionate individual eager to learn how to use bamboo or an architect wanting to gain familiarity with this material, this training is an excellent opportunity to get hands-on experience designing and building with bamboo…

Location: Belega Bamboo Community School (30-35 min SE from Ubud)

Schedule/Time:

The training program runs from 8.30am to 4.30pm from Monday to Saturday. The daily prep session starts at 8.30am though you can arrive at 9.50am as the formal learning program begins at 10am. Lunch is provided each day from 12 til 1pm. Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions or preferences, and we’ll do our best to accommodate them.
