The main reason people in developing countries dont want to build with bamboo is that it doesn’t seem to last long – as insects attack it and devour its sugars usually within 2 to 5 years if left untreated. And treatment methods are expensive and hard to set up – especially if you live in a village. Also most people put bamboos on or near the ground which is a sure fast way to having it rot away quickly once moisture gets in to the bamboo. And even materials to do formwork can be expensive… so, why not make a bamboo formwork basket and line it with plastic waterproofing and pour that with cement and rocks? Thats what we are trying out for this build where we will build a 6.5 m pavilion designed by our group project students Charlotte and Mari… with a bit of inspo thrown in by yours truly.
We are in our first week of our bamboo builders program making furniture-scale carpentarianism to prep ourselves for next week when we will build the pavilion and it’s still possible to join us for the 2 week build…
We will be making a reciprocal roof next week with 6 double beams and hinge-jointing them in between two pillars – and once the roof is set we will support the beams with a lean-in pillar, which in turn will be braced with arches (bending bamboo) for triangulation. We will make a lidi beam around 24m long which is a bundled beam that allows for flex and curving shapes. And lastly use recycled advertising banner to complete our roof (after putting woven bamboo and rafters around the undulating roof). Should be prety sweet and we will use this space during our pop-up inclusive retreat for a play space and workshop area. We will be doing mud-building also to make some sculpture æaround the walls and try out something arty…
